Unit 18 - Assessment types and tasks

Assessment types

In this unit assessment is the key word, it means the judgement teachers make to students performance, there are two type of assessment: Informal in which teachers often comment  on the learners performance and Formal in which tests and exams are given to students to asses them. There are several reasons teachers may want to test students formally: the first may be to know if they know or don't know about the language so teachers use a diagnostic test, to know the level the learners are at a placement test is used, to find out how well students have learnt we use a progress test, to know how well pupils have learnt during the whole course we assess through a achievement tests, to see how well learners are at language a proficiency test is given. Another way of assessing is through portfolios which is an excellent tool to collect pupil's work done during the course.
In addition to assess learners we have also different tasks to apply and they might be subjective in which markers use the judgement to decide if an answer is right or wrong and objective  in which the learners don't have to decide because there is just one correct answer. On the contrary to assess informally teachers can use self or peer assessment to help students to comprehend how the language works and perform better. In this type of assessment teachers have to use a criteria to be fair on grades because these tasks are  almost always assessed subjectively, so to avoid misunderstandings it is better to use a a rubric  because it is easier. To apply this I would recommend to asses students constantly and use various types of tasks to aid learners to have chances to improve their grades. Furthermore we have to be fair with our students grades because they deserved to be scored correctly to know if they have to improve of not and also evaluate the method we are using through the true results we got from our pupil's work.
